Bendigo GovHub.
Building value for a regional government.
Bendigo GovHub
The Galkangu Bendigo GovHub consolidates multiple Victorian Government and City of Greater Bendigo departments into one purpose-built workplace for around 1,000 employees. The 20,000-square-metre, four-storey building is one of the largest cross-laminated timber constructions in Australia. Burgtec was appointed as the single-source supplier for both workstations and loose furniture, a rare appointment for a government project of this scale and a reflection of the trust both the client and ICON placed in Burgtec to deliver the entire package. Engaged while the building was still under construction, Burgtec completed the fitout by practical completion, maintaining quality and delivering long-term value for this major regional local government.

A single vision for multiple agencies

The Bendigo GovHub brings together around a dozen government agencies under one roof, each with different operational needs and design preferences. Burgtec supplied and installed all workstations, meeting and conference room furniture, breakout seating and collaboration settings, ensuring aesthetic and functional consistency throughout the building. The expansive, brand new building features open offices, collaboration areas and civic spaces that support the government’s transition to more connected and flexible working. As a regional project, this undertaking required precise management of logistics, labour and quality control. Burgtec’s experience in regional delivery was instrumental in overcoming these challenges, ensuring all furniture was manufactured, transported and installed on schedule.

The advantage of single-source supply

Burgtec was engaged to deliver the complete workstation and loose furniture package in parallel with the building’s construction. Every item needed to be installed by the date of practical completion, requiring exact coordination between procurement, manufacturing and installation.

The team worked closely with ICON, Lyons and the government to ensure that every component met the original specification. Where substitutions were proposed, Burgtec presented simplified colour sets and sample approvals to ensure alignment with the architect’s design intent and the client’s expectations. Burgtec’s transparent process made this possible, streamlining what could have been a complex multi-stakeholder approval chain.

Experience delivering value

Burgtec’s value management program identified opportunities to reduce cost and improve performance without compromising on quality or design intent. One key area was the specification of high-end 100% wool fabrics, which were found to be unfit for purpose in high-traffic government spaces. Burgtec proposed alternative fabrics with equivalent tone and texture, offering greater durability, longer warranties and significant cost savings for the client. This solution not only provided a better-performing product at a lower cost, it also extended the lifespan of the furniture while aligning with the building’s sustainability goals. As a regional project, Burgtec brought invaluable experience. Labour availability, transport coordination and site access required detailed planning. Burgtec’s disciplined documentation and project control ensured quality and compliance across every element, reinforcing its reputation for reliability in regional delivery.
